The RoboCup

RoboCup is a global initiative of international scientists who inspire and advance research, development and application of artificial intelligence and robotics through robot competitions in different leagues. RoboCup was launched in 1996 by Japanese, American and European researchers with the visionary long-term challenge of developing autonomous soccer-playing humanoid robots that can play on a par with the FIFA human soccer champion in the middle of the 21st century.

Today, RoboCup also includes competitions for intelligent robots as helpers in the home, in industry and in rescue operations. With teams from more than 50 nations, RoboCup is the world's largest competition for intelligent robots. Every year, students and researchers compete with their developments in the fields of robotics, AI, computer science, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering in visionary application disciplines. Researchers from Germany have been involved right from the start. The German teams are among the most successful participants every year and the German Open is the most important event for Europe.

RoboCup in Germany

German scientists have been involved in RoboCup with great commitment and success since its inception. Today, the German RoboCup Regional Committee coordinates all RoboCup activities in Germany, in particular the annual RoboCup German Open event.

German major and junior teams are among the best teams in almost all leagues and frequently win world championship titles and podium finishes among teams from more than 50 participating nations and regions. At the first physical RoboCup World Championship after the COVID-related forced break in 2022 in Bangkok, German teams won a total of six world championship titles in major and junior leagues as well as numerous podium places and awards. Many representatives from Germany are also actively involved in the RoboCup committees.

To pool German and European activities, the European RoboCup Association e.V. was founded in 2020 as a non-profit association based in Darmstadt. The German regional committee legally forms a committee of this association.
